Waiting for Fatima to become Sophie
2018

In such a tragic context the concept of “…

2022
The Kašf al-asrār is a mystical literature work of the Mamluk author Ibn Ġānim al-Maqdisī (d. 1279). It consists of an introduction and thirty-seven chapters, called išārāt, in which flowers and animals present mystical teachings to the narrator. Building on the analysis of the introduction and some chapters of the work, this study aims to show the formal characteristics of the text, its relations with the munāẓara genre, as well as the mystical meanings it contains and the particular role that nature occupies within the work. Nature, indeed, is not here the symbol of a theophany rather it shares the same condition of pain of the human being due to separation from God. Throughout the differ…
Dalya Abudi, Mothers and Daughters in Arab Women's Literature. The family Frontier, Brill, Leiden-Boston 2011, pp. 335
2013
2022
In his work entitled Nasim al-saba (The Breeze of the East Wind), Ibn Habib al-Halabi (d. 1377) dedicates a chapter to the description of a young man (ghulam). The interest of the author in the homoerotic theme confirms the prominent place this topic occupies in premodern Arabic literature. This chapter is characterized by the presence of two parts which differ from a stylistic point of view. The incipit and the closing part present a fictional story which looks like a maqama, while the central part is entirely descriptive. From the analysis of the fictional story, this study aims to show the central role that nature occupies in this part and which seems to constitute the main subject throu…
2018
Abstract This contribution aims to comment on chromaticism by analysing the principal colours as they are mentioned in the landscape descriptions of the maqāmāt of the type munāẓarāt composed in the Yemen of the post-classical era. The colours are mainly manifested in the depictions of the garden area, but can also be characterising of certain vegetal types that sometimes play the main role in these texts. The analysis of the colours enables us to make certain considerations about the state of light and its depictions within this corpus. Indeed, there appears to be a direct correlation in these descriptions between the light and the luminosity characterised by its type of reflection and bri…
